White Sands is a launch spot on the north shore of Buffalo Lake, a large prairie lake in central Alberta, near Stettler. The lake stretches about 20 km east to west, at 781 m altitude.
Buffalo Lake is one of the largest natural lakes in central Alberta. The white sand beaches of White Sands offer comfortable lake access. The vast fetch allows for good sailing conditions with south and west prairie winds. Shallow and warm water in summer. Season from June to September.
Shallow fresh water (average depth 3-5 m). Pleasant summer temperature (19-22°C). Sandy bottom at White Sands, muddy elsewhere. Short prairie lake chop. The E-W lake offers excellent fetch with south or north winds. Stable water level.

Open all year round
Large exposed lake — conditions can deteriorate quickly. Violent prairie thunderstorms with lightning — watch the sky. Motorboats and jet skis, especially on weekends. Shallow bottom. Cool water early in the season (June).
