Atawhai Estuary is a kitesurfing spot located in the Atawhai estuary, north of the city of Nelson. This sheltered body of water offers calm conditions, protected by the Boulder Bank and surrounding hills. Northeast (sea breeze) and northwest winds are the most frequent. The estuary is shallow and strongly affected by tides, with vast areas exposed at low tide. It is essential to sail at high tide. The bottom is muddy and sandy. Spot suitable for beginners thanks to the calm and shallow waters.
