Wimereux is one of the most famous kitesurf spots in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais and a favourite of riders from northern France, Belgium and Germany. Located 5 km north of Boulogne-sur-Mer, the spot works in front of the seawall ("digue") and is totally tide-dependent: at low to mid tide a large sandy beach opens up for quality sessions; at high tide the sea covers the beach and creates a dangerous shore break — the spot is only rideable at low tide ±3 hours.
Best in S and SW (biggest waves, side-off to side-onshore), also good in NW (calmer, freeride flat). Wind is strong — famous for being windier than surrounding areas. Wimkite School is based at the Club Nautique de Wimereux on the seawall. Summer: restricted before 19h — kite from La Rochette.
Wimkite School — main base at Wimereux (Club Nautique de Wimereux, Blvd Thiriez, digue de mer, 62930 Wimereux). 1st kitesurf school in Nord-Pas-de-Calais, since 2005. BPJEPS instructors. Also operates at Wissant. Groups of 3-4 max. March-November. wimkite.com
Kite Camp 62 — kitesurf and wingfoil school at Wimereux. Moniteur BPJEPS Alexandre. 110€ collective (3-4 people), 150€ individual. April-November. Location kite 80€, wing 90€.
Access: A16 exit 32 (Wimereux sud), follow "Centre Régional de Voile / Digue de mer". Parking facing the sea or near the Club Nautique. School Wimkite School: Blvd Thiriez, digue de mer. Summer restriction (July-August): kitesurf forbidden before 19h — alternative spot La Rochette, further south. Mandatory tide check: practice only at low to mid tide.
Intermediate
Open all year round
NO practice at high tide — the beach nearly disappears and waves break against the seawall, creating a very dangerous shore break especially in W to SW wind. Rocky areas at both ends (Fort de la Crèche to the south, rocky zone to the north). Important tidal current — always drift-aware. Summer restriction: kitesurf forbidden before 19h (July-August) — go to La Rochette further south. Crowded spot in good conditions with many windsurfers.
S and SW: biggest waves, side-off to side-onshore — iconic Wimereux conditions. NW: flatter and more controlled, good freeride. N: side-onshore, smaller waves. NE to SE: offshore — forbidden. Wind is typically 5-10 knots stronger here than at nearby spots. Low to mid tide only: at high tide the beach disappears completely and shore break against the seawall is dangerous.
